Next Western Song

from The Reckoning by Paul J Rogers

/

about

This album started off as an album about climate change. Paul began writing this album in 2011.

It was written just after the 2010/2011 Brisbane floods. Paul hadn’t found his voice yet and was not confident enough to sing the lyrics he had written, and so the album became instrumental only.

And that’s where the theme of the album started. Paul (from Brisbane), hoped that after the 2010/2011 floods, that his city would wake up and start taking climate change seriously.

For example, Next Western song, was not about the ‘wild west’. The lyrics were about the continuation and intensification of natural disasters which we now call the ‘new normal'. And the reference to ‘Western’, was about Western Civilization.

Paul hopes to one day release the music again using the lyrics as it was originally intended.

Sonically though, the muse for this album was the film making of Quentin Tarantino, as the characters in his films always seem to find their reckoning too.

The west now is having its reckoning, for all the damage we have done – particularly since the industrial revolution.
